“That was a fast bath.” Frannie sat, tucked into her small bed. “I’m glad. I’m tiwed.”

“Me, too, Frannie.” Jenna stooped and pressed a kiss to her forehead. “You had a big day—full of adventures. I bet you’ll sleep good.”

“Like a log?” Frannie grinned.

“Yep, you’ll sleep like a big old log.” She kissed her again.

“Will you tell Doctaw Buzz thank you again?” Frannie hugged Clarence the giraffe, her favorite stuffed animal. “Big, big thank you? And a hug? Fwum me?”

“I will tell him.” She tapped Frannie on the nose. “You get some sleep and have beautiful dreams.”

“Okay,” Frannie said, yawning widely as she flopped back against her pillows.

Jenna paused in the doorway and turned off the overhead light. Frannie’s nightlight clicked on, projecting a slowly spinning starburst on the opposite wall. “Night,” she said again, leaving the door barely cracked.

Jenna peeked in on Biddy, too. Her baby sister had kicked off her blankets and was sound asleep—with her little arms thrown over her head. She blew her a kiss and tiptoed from the room, pulling the door shut behind her.

Then she froze.

Buzz was downstairs.

Monica and Garrett were upstairs getting ready for bed.

Meaning...she’d be alone with Buzz. Alone-alone. She shook her head, staring up at the ceiling overhead. We can have dinner and a conversation, like two normal people. That was the key. Conversation. If they were talking—and eating—they’d be too occupied to get caught up in the staring...and other stuff. Right. Sure. Who am I kidding?

She’d invited him to dinner. After everything he’d done tonight, it was the least she could do. Hiding up here was...cowardly. I’m no coward. She forced herself downstairs and into the kitchen. Where she froze. “What happened?” Candles were lit, sitting in their crystal candlesticks, in the middle of the table. The table had been covered in a clean non-plastic kid-friendly tablecloth and had two places set—with her mother’s fine china.

Buzz had been studying the photos covering the front of her refrigerator but he turned now, shrugging. “This wasn’t your idea?”

She stared at him. “A romantic candlelight dinner?” Was he serious? No. He couldn’t be. “Are you serious? I’m pretty good at multitasking but I’m not sure how I would have managed this and bath time and Biddy and Frannie’s bedtime routine.”

He grinned. “So far, you’ve managed to make the impossible look easy so...”

Jenna smiled in spite of herself. “Thank you but this is all Monica.” Just when she thought she and her sister had finally reached an understanding, she went and did...this. She took a minute, assessing Monica’s work. “I’m impressed.” She had to admit, Monica had done well. “Where are the rest of the chairs?” She frowned at the two chairs. “How could anyone comfortably eat that close?” The chairs were squished together, no space between them.

Buzz kept on grinning. “You do have more than two? I was thinking that would make things awful inconvenient at mealtime.”

“Eight, total.” She really wished he’d stop grinning that way. “I’m sorry about this. Monica watches a lot of those reality matchmaking shows.
